The Scenic Route (recommended for motorcyclists)


The Hwy 17 Route

  • Take Hwy 101, or 280, or 880, or 680, SOUTH to Hwy 17.
  • Drive south on Hwy 17, over the Summitt. Scotts Valley is the first town after the Ocean Chevrolet billboard. 
  • Take the second Scotts Valley exit, Felton/ Big Basin/ Mt. Hermon Road. Make a RIGHT at the end of the exit ramp. You'll be traveling west on Mt. Hermon Road. 
  • Drive through Scotts Valley, past six traffic lights. The next-to-last traffic light is Lockwood Lane/ Skypark Drive. 
  • Make a RIGHT onto Lockhart Gulch Road. 
  • Drive 1.6 miles up Lockhart Gulch Road, past Mission Springs Conference Center. Look for #1592, a house with a white picket fence. (That’s our next-door neighbor.)
  • CAREFULLY turn RIGHT into the driveway of the house right after 1592. That’s 1612; you're welcome there.

The Coastal Route

  • Take Hwy 1 to Hwy 17.
  • Drive north on Hwy 17, passing the exit for Pasatiempo Golf Course.
  • Take the next exit: Felton/ Big Basin/ Mt. Hermon Road. Follow the road around; you'll be traveling west on Mt. Hermon Road. 
  • Drive through Scotts Valley, past six traffic lights. The next-to-last traffic light is Lockwood Lane/ Skypark Drive. (Do not turn in there. Those people are aliens.) 
  • Make a RIGHT onto Lockhart Gulch Road. 
  • Drive 1.6 miles up Lockhart Gulch Road, past Mission Springs Conference Center. Look for #1592, a house with a white picket fence. (That’s our next-door neighbor.)

The Scenic Route

Anyone who loves to ride can find zillions of beautiful ways to get to my neighborhood. Routes that meander off Hwy 17 and eventually get to me include:
  • Hwy 17 to Bear Creek Road to Hwy 9 (then Mt. Hermon Road east to Lockhart Gulch)
  • Hwy 17 to Idylwild to Old Santa Cruz Hwy to Summit Road to Hwy 17
  • Hwy 17 to Idylwild to Old Santa Cruz Hwy to Summit Road to Mountain Charlie Road or Zayante Road (actually, you can use Mountain Charlie Road to sneak directly into my neighboorhood, but I do NOT recommend doing Mt. Charlie Rd. on a street bike. Besides, you'll probably piss off the inhabitants)
  • Hwy 17 to Idylwild to Old Santa Cruz Hwy, to Vine Hill Road, to Hwy 17 (pretty, but logistically silly)
Depends on how kamikaze you're feeling, and how crummy the weather is.  :-)
