Careers in Technical Communication

The UC Berkeley Extension used to produce an introduction to the field. The two-day seminar was called Careers In Technical Communication. I alternated giving this seminar with its original author, Bruce Overby, who used a slightly different approach. I took a turn in 1999, Bruce took a turn in 2000, and I was happily anticipating taking a turn again in 2001 until the Extension decided that it was more cost-effective to let interested students attend Meet The Instructor night.

I loved giving this seminar, and I was sorry to see it go. In memoriam -- and because there's no sense in having all this information to go waste -- here are the slides I created for the students.

Day One, A.M. : includes A Brief History of Technical Communication, What Do Technical Communicators Do?

Day One, PM: includes What's Different About Technical Writing? and Career Paths for Technical Communicators

Day Two: includes Preparing Your  Skills Inventory, Job Banks, Recruiters, and Headhunters, Resume Workshop, Panel Discussion
